During this down time, I couldn't qualify for any help with going back to school, so I'm resorting to the best education - Home Schooling. Self Learning - Spanish (Latin American)1
Oh My God. I took 4 years of French in high school and that is constantly messing me up and adding confusion to this test. I have the Instant Immersion disks ... the Pimsleur introduction course (8 parts; haven't touched the rest) .... and I have a partial (er, uh, um) Rosetta Stone.
Just curious if anyone here has learned the language and has any thoughts? For example, since I'm audio oriented, the pimsleur (audio) program was very good. But I had no idea how to spell what I was hearing. When I started looking at the Instant Immersion and Rosetta Stone and SEEING the words, it blew me away.
Conjugations .... AAAAARRGGGGHH. I'm not even sure today what an ENGLISH pronoun is, let alone spanish ..... and all these different tenses - is MIND BOGGLING!!!! But I've come to the conclusion, I've got to go back and learn these basics.
Any thoughts? What works best for you? Does it matter?
How does somebody like Condoleeza Rice speak 6 ? different languages fluently?!? I must be retarded.
Asta Luego, amigo. Escribe, por favor. (or is that escriber? %!$$!#)

En Espanol, or in any of the romance languages, it's important to learn I, you, he she, we you they/they, because what is amigo to you might be amiga to me (ergo, Asta Luego, amiga, because I am a "she" not a he--and there's why you're having trouble. All of these romance languages are BASED in LATIN, or have a latin base. Much of Latin is very familiar (iow, there are a fair number of american words that come directly from the Latin), and many of the words in French, Spanish, Italian etc, have Latin roots as well. And so if you've studied Latin, you could theoretically walk into any country and be able to determine what someone was saying--same goes from French to Spanish and vice versa.
But seriously, I think the best way to learn, gringo, is to immerse yourself in it. This way, if you want to communicate, you have to learn quickly--rapido--in french-rapidment. See?
Condalisa Rice can likely "get around" in 8 different languages--but she might starve if she had to depend on local slang--Sometimes, if I hear Dutch (or any of the Norse languages), I can make out what they are talking about--including German--sometimes I'm lost.
I used to use MIRC a LOT, and hang out in the chat rooms (remember AOL?) and watch people chatter in French. Every so often, I would type in "Quesque ce, "this word", and someone would come back and explain it once they knew I was english speaking. From there, it was just a matter of watching and learning. I haven't been on MIRC in like FOREVER. Perhaps I should hang out in the Spanish speaking forums. Download MIRC and find out.
